Rollicking Night Life in Hong Kong

After an exhausting day of sight seeing the only thing to do in Hong Kong is not to lay back and relax, but to dress up and head out to one of the many happening night spots in the city. Some of the best bars and pubs in Asia can be found in Hong Kong, beer and various alcoholic beverages from a multitude of countries flow freely; locals drink to a long hard day at work or for unrequited love while tourists head here to experience the vibrant nightlife of Hong Kong.

Night Clubs in Hong Kong can be segregated along the lines of their clientele, those that cater to locals and those that cater to tourists. Most of the cosmopolitan clubbing action takes place in Central but, if you prefer to go clubbing with just the locals, there are some fairly wild clubs in Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui.

Some of the best nightlife can be found on Hong Kong Island in the Lan Kwai Fong and the SoHo areas. Lan Kwai Fong is the hangout place in Hong Kong with superb international restaurants, bars and clubs. Catering to a predominately expat/international crowd, “Lan Kwai” is perfect for after-work drinks, intimate dinners and serious partying. On weeknights, crowds spill out onto the sloping streets as they mingle and enjoy their beers.

SoHo, or South of Hollywood Road is a neighborhood lined with charming international restaurants and cozy bars. Based around Elgin Street and Staunton Street, just off the Mid Levels escalator, SoHo is the more relaxed yet funky cousin to Lan Kwai Fong. Most of the restaurants in this neighborhood are very intimate and just walking through SoHo is like touring the world. Choices include Cajun jambalaya, Cuban guarapos, Indian tandoori, French crepes and Chinese noodles – there is something to suit all taste buds.

With in easy access of the party districts of Lan Kwai Fong and SoHo is a hotel in Hong Kong that gives tourists comfortable accommodation, Hotel Jen is located centrally so it not only gives access to the nightlife but to most other attractions in Hong Kong as well.

Asia Travel Guide

While Europe will always be a popular tourist destination as well as the beaches of Hawaii and Australia, why not try out Asia travel the next time you plan a vacation?

Take for example, the country of China, which has always been one of the places that easily come to mind when you think of Asia travel. Must-sees while you’re in China are the Forbidden City, Terracotta Warriors, Great Wall of China, Tiannamen Square, however, these are all just from the Northern part of China, there’s still so much to see in the other parts of this huge country, like the futuristic city of Shanghai and the cuddly pandas that abound in the city of Cheng and the wholesale markets in Guangdong where a lot of the fashion accessories that you see in malls may have come from. Visiting China may be fairly cheap – but it does depend on which city you go to, small cities like Dongguan may have a low cost of living as opposed to the bustling city of Shanghai, which is very similar to the very cosmopolitan city of Hong Kong.

Of course, engaging in some Asia travel practically requires you to immerse yourself with the local culture. One great example is China’s local food culture, which is definitely a lot different from what people are used to in Chinese restaurants abroad. Some people say that enjoying Chinese cuisine is an acquired taste, especially when it comes to the street food. Expect to see all sorts of animal parts and insects, cut up into little pieces and skewered on sticks – as snacks. Unique treats like fermented tofu and mung bean soup are also something for the more adventurous.

But what about other countries to explore for Asia Travel? Well, if you are the beach bunny type then you might want to check out the lovely beaches of Bali in Indonesia or the relaxing waters of Phuket in Thailand. Both are very budget-friendly Asia travel destinations by the way, from the accommodations down to the food, you will surely get more bang for your buck at these places.

For city slickers however, there is the lovely city of Singapore which is just beside the equally charming Malaysia where tourists can find the city of Kuala Lumpur. It is interesting to note that as neighbors, there are a lot of similarities between these two countries like the huge ferris wheel. As for hotels though, expect Singapore to offer higher rates – even for backpacker hostels. In order to make the most of the great shopping opportunities in both Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, schedule your trip starting from May to August wherein there are myriad of shopping sales available.

Of course, there are definitely a lot more places to explore while you are in Asia, like the tropical country of the Philippines and the ever-vibrant city of Tokyo in Japan, among others. While Asia is a continent which is fairly safe to travel to, do keep in mind that you should always be aware of your surroundings and take caution in whatever you do. Do not keep your money in just one place, make sure that you keep your passport in a secure place, and don’t just trust strangers – especially the ones who are very eager to take you someplace. Don’t forget to bring your credit card in case of emergencies, an updated guide book and map, as well as list of the local emergency numbers – just in case.

Is Real Estate In Bangkok Cheap

There is still a lot of interest in the Bangkok property market by international investors, who still feel that real estate in Bangkok is cheap when compared to other Asian cities of a similar size.

Are these people making the right comparisons? There are a number of differences between Bangkok and other more expensive cities in Asia. Take Hong Kong or Singapore (probably the 2 main cities that the people in the group above are comparing with). Firstly, both Hong Kong and Singapore have obvious land constraints. The whole country of Singapore is about the size of Bangkok and they literally cant keep building because they dont have the land, unless they find a way to build on water! Bangkok on the other hand does have the land. The south of Bangkok is sea-locked but east, west and north are all there and open for the taking. The north of Bangkok is already quite developed, no doubt this being partially a result of the old international airport at Don Muang, but heading out east and west of the city you will quickly come across large open green areas waiting to be developed upon.

Secondly, the average salary per capita is higher in Singapore and Hong Kong than Bangkok. People in Hong Kong earn more. Everything is determined by supply and demand and if you get paid more in Hong Kong wouldnt you be willing to spend more there? Would people ever be willing to pay the same price for real estate in Bangkok as Hong Kong if salaries were 5 times more in Hong Kong? Is this situation likely to change? On a similar note, I would imagine that it is easier to employ cheaper labour in Bangkok and therefore cheaper to build in the first place.

Lets look at some figures for 2006. The average price per square metre of a 120 sq.m. apartment in Hong Kong was approximately US$12,599 compared to US$11,800 in Singapore and US$2,819 in Thailand. Taking Hong Kong as the example, apartment prices were 4.47 times higher in Hong Kong than Thailand.

Now lets compare GDP per Capita for the same period. In Hong Kong the GDP per Capita was approximately US$ 26,824 per person, compared to US$30,161 in Singapore and US$2,959 in Thailand. In this case, GDP per person is over 9 times more in Hong Kong than Thailand.

Is Bangkok a more desirable place to live in? This really depends on your own point of view. Some people might give more weighting to cheap Macdonalds, restaurants, taxis and an attraction to the opposite sex. Others might give more weighting to tidy litter free streets, pavements you can walk on, less traffic pollution and no street dogs. This is inconclusive.

We could turn to the surveys. According to the UN Human Development Report of 2006, who based their findings on life expectancy, literacy, education, and standard of living, this being a standard means of measuring well-being, Hong Kong came in at number 22 (with a total score of 0.927), Singapore came in at number 25 (with 0.916), and Thailand came in at number 74 (with 0.784) just in front of Samoa and Saudi Arabia.

Of course, this is taking the population and country as a whole. If we take the two parameters of literacy and education, then there are a number of good quality international schools in Thailand and if you factored into the equation the cost of private schooling and general cost of living in Thailand, you may still find it more cost advantageous to live in Thailand.

In any event, I rarely hear people comparing the price of real estate in Bangkok with that in Manila, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh or Jakarta. Is there really that much difference? Is Bangkok really that much more similar to Hong Kong and Singapore, are we comparing wines of the same vintage or is the price of real estate in Bangkok as it should be?

A single womans guide to Bangkok, Thailand

I’m a worrier. I don’t think I’d have got around the world a few years ago without being a worrier.

So this article will concentrate on the single “lady” being careful in Bangkok – or anywhere for that matter – rather than on the places she might want to visit.

First of all, I’d prefer “female” or “girl” or even “chick”. “Lady” sounds like a 1920s Englishwoman off on safari!

OK, so pack an extra pair of panties! That’s what you’d expect me to say, right? But that’s for a separate article.

When a girl is travelling alone, there are different rules and regulations than there are for a boy travelling alone. Often BECAUSE of boys travelling alone.

In Bangkok, unless you’re a well-seasoned traveller, DON’T just turn up at a backpackers’ hostel and ask for a bed. Even if you don’t get offered one in the corner of a room full of men smoking goodness-knows-what (and it does happen!), you’ll at best be squeezed into a women’s dorm in which are girls who return, drunk, at 2 a.m. and spend the rest of the night between bed and bathroom.

Ah, the bathroom! Bangkok’s aren’t the worst in the world (those are in Hong Kong in my experience) and they usually DO provide paper, but the female traveller ALWAYS needs to be wary of them! Travellers from the U.S. please remember – Eastern facilities are rarely “restrooms”.

If you sit, hold your bag on your lap; if you squat, strap it around our neck before you even drop your jeans. WHEREVER you travel, carry some tissues with you and always have some spare ones in your bags back at the hotel. There are few day-to-day things worse in life than there being no tp!

Back to bed. If you DO have to bunk in shared accommodation, keep your valuables in the bed with you – either in pockets of whatever you wear (and do wear something!) or under the sheet you’re lying on.

If you have a quick check of your belongings everytime you move, you’ll never forget them. The easiest way to do this is by choosing a phrase or sentence to represent your important things. (E.G. carrying a purse, tickets, money, keys, tampons and passport? The initials are P, T, M, K, T, P, so make up a silly phrase you’ll always remember. Something rude is often best (!), but here we’ll settle for “Please Take My Kettle To Paris”. Say that 10 times a day and you’ll soon know if anything’s missing!).

Where to hide things when on the move? Well, you’re a woman. An obvious hiding place for money is in your bra. If someone tries to pinch it from there, believe me, you’ll

How to fix Chinas problems

A really good way to help fix China’s problems is to make friends there. Here is my story….

* The Illustrious Madam Liu: Working for a Hardcore Communist Chinese Boss

A rough Start in China……….

A little more than ten years ago, I had the great fortune to travel to China and to live and work there for several years. The beginning was tough because the first company I had signed on with ended up being somewhat flakey and unclear about the mission it wanted me to fulfill.

Under that company’s flag I lived in Hong Kong for a few months, and then I was transferred to Shanghai to start up a new branch there. Within weeks after arriving in Shanghai, I sent a report to the office in Hong Kong stating that the new venture would probably not show a profit until after two years. Upon hearing this, the Hong Kong office peremptorily decided to fire me, and relayed instructions for me to pack up and go home.

I had been sacked

Digging In……….

Within days upon my arrival in Shanghai, I knew that Hong Kong was no comparison to Shanghai. The city “On the Sea” (Shanghai’s literal meaning) was the place for me. I would have done anything to stay there.

I had been fired, but I shot a message back to the Hong Kong office telling them to get stuffed. I determined to forgo their offer to ship my worldly belongings back to America. At the end of that day, I was left with a large pile of unpacked boxes in my apartment, no job, no prospect for a job, enough cash to fill the palm of only one hand, and a lot of hope and love for this new and wonderful city a city under whose dazzling bright lights I found myself basking.

After about two weeks of frantic job searching, I started to become disheartened. Money was soon running out, and the prospect of losing a foothold in my new home was an ever-growing nightmare on the immediate horizon. I stopped myself in the midst of my panic, and stood in the middle of my home. I forced myself to relax and spoke aloud, intending exactly what I felt in my heart: I had to stay in Shanghai.

Luckily I stayed on for some of the best years of my life.

A New Job & The Amazing Lars……….

The day after making this resolution, I made a telephone call to the right place at the right time.

On a lark I decided to call one of my previous employer’s main competitors. After being passed around on the phone a few times, I ended up speaking with Lars Amstrup, a wonderful Danish man who was later to become

Enjoy Mooncakes in Hong Kong During the Mid-autumn Festival

As the longest lingering bastion of the British Empire, Hong Kong has often attracted attention from historians, media stalwarts and ordinary travellers alike. However, anyone keen to escape the hustle and bustle of Kowloon and the crowded streets of Central should make sure to visit Hong Kong when it’s in its least commercial time of year – during the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated in a range of East Asian countries, including China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore. Originally, the festival commemorated the 14th century Chinese uprising against the Mongols, in which the rebels spread the word of revolution on pieces of paper that were hidden in cakes. Today, however, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a pan-Asian celebration of togetherness and harmony, and generally falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month of the Chinese calendar (often mid-to-late September or early October).

Anyone visiting Hong Kong during the Mid-Autumn Festival will be treated to a colourful showcase, where families make up and light bright lanterns throughout the city. Traditionally, lanterns are made in the shape of animals but more recently, modern technological icons, like space ships and aeroplanes, have also been a popular choice.

Moreover, the Mid-Autumn Festival is often called the ‘mooncake’ festival, since mooncakes are traditionally eaten during this time. Mooncakes (or yuek beng) are widely considered a delicacy, and are sweet, baked cakes that consist of a thin, soft skin with a sugary, oily filling. Often, mooncakes will contain one or more whole salted duck egg yolks in the centre to symbolise the full moon, while the actual filling can vary according to regional culture.

The original mooncake filling is popularly believed to be lotus seed paste, which (due to its high price) is often substituted by white kidney bean paste instead. Other seed pastes that are used to fill mooncakes include red bean paste (made from adzuki beans), mung bean and black bean paste; but jujube paste and five kernel paste are also popular. As well as indulging in special mooncakes, many Chinese families will also eat pomeloes (a large type of grapefruit) while having barbeques outside under the moon.

Flights to Hong Kong leave London so regularly that it’s relatively simple these days to make a quick trip to the city over a period of a few days. And, if you’ve got friends or family in Hong Kong, or you simply want to explore one of Asia’s most fascinating cities, the Mid-Autumn Festival is the perfect time to visit.
